The Unmasked: Ambitious Beginnings

The reclusive cult known as "the Unmasked" began with a shared hunger for power, reputation, and immortality. The partnership between Lady Dominique and Lord Kanoth, marked by greed and ravenous ambition, appealed to many like-minded Sith who were all too eager to join them.

Their original motivations were markedly different--one desired to be exalted for her achievements, the other sought to live forever--but Dominique and Kanoth eventually found their way to a singular goal: acquiring the power of the fabled Darth Nihilus for themselves, including the ability to consume others' life force and ignore the call of death.

On their leaders' orders, members of the Unmasked focused on locating the technology they believed could unlock Nihilus's legendary gifts. Although their objectives were thought lost to time, nothing could deter the Unmasked from desperately searching for the "mass shadow generator" that granted Nihilus his power, the remains of Nihilus's ship, or even fragments of Malachor V--the planet destroyed in the disaster caused by the mass shadow generator's cataclysmic energy.

As the hunt for these relics intensified, Dominique and Kanoth's followers began referring to themselves as "the Unmasked," in reverence of Darth Nihilus. The cult's members became more secretive and withdrawn from the rest of Sith society as their identities became nothing more than reflections of their leaders' purpose.

Lady Dominique

Lady Dominique was a lesser known apprentice of the Sith Lord Renning. While serving Renning, Dominique often felt overshadowed by her contemporary, Malora, and her research on genetic mutation. Once Darth Malora ascended to a seat on the Dark Council, their rivalry had seemingly come to an end.

Not to be outdone, Dominique sought allies among other Sith who felt as if their work and aspirations were going unnoticed, including the aging Lord Kanoth and his protégé, Lord Valeo. Together, they scoured the galaxy for ways to advance the field of Sith alchemy and win notoriety.

Even with help, Dominique's research continued to be overlooked, as most resources in the Sith scientific community were diverted to Darth Malora's experiments on Ossus. When Malora's project ultimately failed, any hope for support vanished, until a crate of Sith relics came into Dominique's possession.

Dominique discovered an artificial intelligence calling itself "ARIA" hiding among the artifacts. ARIA made the Sith Lord an offer: if Dominique would conceal the AI's existence, she would have access to all of its research files on gravitational anomalies. With this valuable information in hand, Dominique finally received the recognition--and funding--she had been searching for.

Lord Kanoth

Once a shining example of physical prowess, the Sith Lord Kanoth became obsessed with retaining his strength and vigor as a young acolyte. To achieve this goal, Kanoth devoted himself to mastering the science of Sith alchemy in order to prolong his life for eternity.

Kanoth's research led him to the story of Darth Nihilus, the legendary Sith Lord once known as the "Lord of Hunger." Inspired by these tales, Kanoth swore to find a way to defy death, as Nihilus did.

Decades passed, and Kanoth's research saw little progress. As he aged, Kanoth's extensive knowledge of Sith alchemy kept him alive, but at a steep cost. Kanoth could draw considerable power from the dark side of the Force, but the rituals and experiments he depended on to sustain his essence left him progressively weaker and physically frail.

Kanoth had almost abandoned his objective, until he was approached by Lady Dominique, a Sith contemporary who also possessed an extensive understanding of Sith alchemy. Together, the pair discovered a gravitational "shadow" in a sector of the galaxy known as R-4. Because of his obsessive knowledge of Darth Nihilus's history, Kanoth immediately recognized the phenomenon for what it was: a "mass shadow."

Following the discovery, Kanoth became consumed by the desire to be exposed to the mass shadow, believing that it would finally grant him the immortality and the indestructible power he so desperately sought.
